The Art of Self-Leadership
Before you can take your leaders to the next level, you need to focus on taking your leadership to the next level. You’ll always struggle to lead others unless you first learn to lead yourself! But you can’t do it alone.
I was mentored. I got lucky. One of my professors called me once a month for 25 years after I left seminary… and he wasn’t the only mentor in my life. Unfortunately, I’ve found that I was the exception. Most leaders are not mentored. But to be fair – this is perhaps because most leaders don’t pursue mentoring.
Nexus’ secret sauce is our Leader Care (coaching, mentoring, training, community, and accountability.) We’re focused on developing you. Leader Care is the difference between stagnation and growth, and at the upcoming ThinkNEXT, we will help you drill down on the nuts and bolts of mentoring and being mentored.
Come sit in on an open conversation with 3 of my current mentors to learn the Art of Self-Leadership. We will explore such nuts and bolts topics as:
Executive Director – Nexus Church Planting & Leader Care
Global Outreach Associate – TCM International
Dr. David Roadcup is a former church planter and the cofounder and outreach director for e2: Effective Elders. He’s also the Professor of Discipleship and Global Outreach Representative with TCM International Institute. He has served the Kingdom in vocational ministry for over 50 years through dozens of ministries in a myriad of roles. His MA is from Cincinnati Bible Seminary, and his DMin is from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs – Dallas Christian College
Dr. John L. Derry served as Hope International University’s sixth President from August 2003 – August 2019. Now semi-retired, Dr. Derry continues to teach online courses for HIU’s College of Business & Management.
John is a graduate of Lincoln Christian College. He has served as Vice President for Student Development at Milligan College, president of Dallas Christian College, and more. He currently specializes in helping large colleges and universities develop and implement succession plans for both senior leaders and board members.
Pastor at Journey Church Hawaii
Pastor John is a husband, father, and grandfather. A local boy from Kailua and a 1979 graduate of St. Louis School Honolulu. He has an undergraduate degree [BSOE Christian Studies] from Wayland Baptist University and a graduate degree [MA Christian Ministry] from Pac Rim University.
John entered full-time ministry in 1984. He has served as an Associate Pastor at Hope Chapel Kaneohe (Anchor Church); Founding and Senior Pastor of Hope Chapel Kapolei (Freedom Church) and Executive Pastor at One Love Ministries. He has equipped others to plant churches in Hawaii, Okinawa, and the Philippines. He serves as a coach and consultant to pastoral leaders here and abroad who have a heart-desire to make disciples that make disciples and plant churches that plant churches.
Executive Director of Nexus
Phil and Barb started their first church straight out of seminary and consider themselves missionaries to the North American continent. Their first assignment was to “start a church for unchurched people using only unchurched people to do it.” It was an exciting ride… The Claycombs stayed in hands-on church planting for 13 years, planting two churches which each planted a daughter church. In 2001 Phil and Barb transitioned into a coaching and training role, helping other church planters pursue their own callings. Phil worked with Stadia: new church strategies from 2001-2005. The Claycomb’s moved to Texas in 2006 and launched Nexus: church planting leadership. Phil and Barb enjoy working together to support church-planting couples and families.
